PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

In my first President’s Message, I would like to start out with thanking our out-going President, Genia Ryan, for her unending and selfless work for the AHS these last four years. She was drafted as the Treasurer, by Penny, and has been on the Board for many years. She will still be on the Board, available for late night advice and encouragement for me. I know that I could not do this job without her direction and help. A great big “Thank You” from all of us at AHS to you. Genia is currently recovering from knee replacement surgery, so send her your prayers and best wishes via email at genia@georgiaalfa.org

Secondly, I would like to thank Beth Wielage for her many, many years of organizing volunteers for AHS events. You also might recognize Beth at the check-in desk, doling out raffle tickets, with a big smile on her face. She has had to step down from our Board because of family responsibilities. We will miss her happy face, even temperament, and encouraging words at Board meetings and at our volunteer events. We hope to see her at general meetings, just enjoying herself in the audience.

So, I have big shoes to fill. When Penny McHenry started the AHS in 1995, it was her mission to expand the love and knowledge of Hydrangeas all over the United States. Those are pretty big goals to accomplish, which the American Hydrangea Society has been striving for ever since. The following is a list of past Presidents:  Penny McHenry; Sara Henderson; Raymond Patchen and Tara Dillard. We all at AHS thank you for your time, energy, devotion and vision that have carried us to this time and place.

So, now it is my turn to take the reins and bring us into 2010. It is my pleasure to do this and I hope to be able to live up to the membership’s expectations as we plan for our wonderful Hydrangea Garden Tour on June 12th. Details will be forthcoming on what gardens we will be touring.

Please join us at our February 22nd General Meeting (hospitality at 6:30, meeting starting promptly at 7pm), where we will feature guest speaker, Tim Wood from Spring Meadow Nursery.  He is the source of the wonderful hydrangea plants that everyone had the chance to get at our October meeting. Tim will be speaking about those particular varieties, and other topics, to be sure. Don’t miss our next exciting meeting.

May your gardens have sunshine and rain, and your families have health and happiness. Spring is just around the corner…….

Fondly,
Sandy Jones

WHO STARTED THE AMERICAN HYDRANGEA SOCIETY?

The American Hydrangea Society was founded by Penny McHenry in 1994 in Atlanta, GA. Her story of how she started this society is a simple one:

"In 1975, I was given a gift of a blue hydrangea. It was love at first sight. As I explored the genus, my passion grew. A few years later, I learned I was not alone; many gardeners share my addiction. By 1994, I was convinced that the world's perfect shrub deserved a plant society to celebrate and explore its versatility."
